Before teeth grinding can be prevented it is important to determine the cause. Many people that show evidence of teeth grinding or bruxism are given bite guards. When bruxism has correctly diagnosed a custom fitted occlusal bite guard is an excellent option. Unfortunately, there are many times when a bite guard may not be the proper treatment.

That is why it is important to see a dentist that thoroughly understands your problem as well as possible factors that are causing the grinding. Properly restoring the teeth to the correct bite or treatment for sleep apnea are just two of the many examples that could stop grinding.

Worn and chipped teeth are usually fixed with white tooth colored materials such as composite bonding filling material or porcelains. Depending upon what you want and need there are a variety of materials and options that be utilized to fix worn and chipped teeth.

Friction against teeth rubbing together incorrectly causes them to wear down. You may be grinding your teeth or have an unstable bite. If this is the cause, a custom made bite guard known as an occlusal splint, may be indicated. Other recommendations may be a simple bite adjustment or rebuilding the worn teeth.

Another form of wear may be due to erosion where tooth structure actually starts to dissolve away. Erosion is commonly associated with underlying health problems, the foods we eat or drink, medicines, supplements, and liquids we put in our mouths. It is very common with people that have acid reflux, sleep apnea, GERD, and chronic dry mouth.

Dr. Aiello feels it is important to thoroughly evaluate each patient’s situation individually. This allows us to have a solution that can fix the current problem and prevent it from causing more damage.

Typically a bite guard is made to take the stress off of teeth, muscles, and the jaw joints. A properly fitted guard helps the jaw joint and muscles relax. We recommend proper home care including brushing at least twice a day. The best times to brush are before bedtime and in the morning. Avoid sweets, soda pop, and juices between meals. Make regular visits to a dentist that is good with children.

As Your Child Grows

As your child gets older, Dr. Aiello may recommend additional services for them; fluoride treatments help protect their developing teeth, and dental sealants coat the chewing surfaces of their back teeth to protect them from the bacteria and acids that cause tooth decay.

Dental Protection and Athletics

If your child decides to participate in athletics, Dr. Aiello can discuss and recommend the right mouth guard for their needs. Protecting their mouth during sports is vital as sports-related injuries account for nearly 40 percent of dental emergencies.

We understand that it’s much more convenient for families to receive their dental care from the same provider, so there’s no need to drive your little one all over town when there’s a warm and welcoming environment for them at Michael Aiello, DDS!

Dental Crowns and Bridges

A dental filling is ideal for repairing the hole in your tooth that is left by cavities. Unfortunately, very large cavities or fractures may not leave enough stable tooth enamel to support a filling. In cases such as these, it is necessary for Dr. Aiello to cover the tooth with a crown, instead of rebuilding it with a filling.

Why You Need a Crown

A crown is designed to protect your entire tooth structure, while closely mimicking your natural tooth. Most visible crowns are made of porcelain so they can be customized to blend flawlessly with your smile. They are also durable and provide the function of biting, eating, and chewing that you had before.

It typically takes two visits to complete a dental crown. Dr. Aiello prepares your tooth for the crown during the first visit and creates a temporary version that you will wear while your final restoration is being created at a world-class dental laboratory according to his specifications. When your final crown is ready, you'll return to our office to have it placed permanently.

If your tooth has been diagnosed as needing a crown, it's critical that you don't put off your treatment in order to avoid further damage. Give us a call today for more information.

A crown is a covering over a single tooth.  A bridge replaces missing teeth by having two or more crowned teeth connect to missing teeth. Both of these options stay fixed in the mouth. Oftentimes a crown is placed to protect a tooth too weak to support itself.  Other times it may be placed for cosmetic purposes to reshape or change the color of a tooth.

Dental Implants

The answer is it depends on you.  We take time to explain the different options to our patients and recommend what best fits each individual person's needs and expectations.   Typically dental implants and bridges are the best-fixed options to replace missing teeth. For some people, a good quality removable partial or denture may serve their needs.

Emergency Services

Although most lost fillings are not an emergency, we typically advise our patients to seek care as soon as reasonable. Our advice is to contact us as soon as you can so we can help evaluate the urgency and set up proper care.

Extractions

Do you suffer from fear when you enter the dentist's office? Does anxiety often keep you from visiting the dentist on a regular basis? Do you have certain issues like a bad gag reflex that makes certain dental procedures more uncomfortable? You might be the perfect candidate for sedation dentistry!

Sedation dentistry is safe and effective for patients of all ages, and we offer two different options depending on your specific needs:

  • Nitrous oxide - Also known as laughing gas, this is an effective solution for helping you relax during any type of procedure. It leaves your system right away, so you can resume your usual activities, and it's safe for both adults and children.
  • Oral conscious sedation - This type of sedation is delivered through a pill taken one hour prior to your treatment procedure. It provides deeper relaxation; in fact, you may even feel as if you are sleeping even though you are still conscious and responsive. The amnesic nature of the medication ensures that you remember little to nothing about your procedure.

If you feel that sedation dentistry is a good option for you, Dr. Aiello will review your medical history prior to treatment to determine which type of sedation is most appropriate.

A simple extraction is a routine tooth removal.  A surgical extraction typically requires a more advanced procedure such as sectioning of the tooth, bone removal, elevation of gingival (gum) tissue, or other special considerations. It is often associated with a tooth that is badly broken down or infected.

Invisible Braces

An evaluation is necessary to determine if you are a candidate. We offer a complimentary no charge screening to help determine if clear aligner treatment is suitable for you.

Clear aligner treatments such as Invisalign are nearly invisible. This is one of the many benefits to this treatment.

Insurance coverage varies by plan. If your insurance covers orthodontics then clear aligner treatment typically will have some coverage.

Periodontal Care

LANAP stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, which utilizes laser technology to treat advanced cases of periodontal (gum) disease.

Gum disease is an infection of the bone and soft tissues that support your teeth. If this condition is left untreated, it will result in tooth loss as the tissues and bone are gradually destroyed. Periodontitis, which is advanced gum disease, may require surgery to preserve your teeth and your oral health.

How LANAP Works

When Dr. Aiello uses the dental laser to complete the LANAP procedure, there is no longer a need for surgery. The laser combines light and heat to direct a precise beam that can eliminate diseased tissues. It also sterilizes the area, which promotes tissue regeneration and accelerates the healing process.

Dr. Aiello is one of only two dentists in the Detroit, MI area that is certified by the Institute for Advanced Laser Technology to use the PerioLase dental laser for LANAP procedures. He is proud to offer this innovative technology to his periodontal patients because it not only eliminates the need for invasive surgery, it’s also more comfortable.
