Staying Calm During Your Clinton Township Dental Emergency
When you experience a traumatic event, your first instinct is usually to panic. Emergencies and injuries can bring up all sorts of emotions, and it’s normal to feel like you can’t think straight.
Particularly if you’ve never injured your smile or had a toothache before, your dental emergency might feel especially scary. Dental emergencies involve injuries to your teeth, gums, tongue, jaw, face, and neck, and it can be pretty alarming to see blood coming out of your mouth or notice visible swelling in your face.
Despite all these feelings of fear and adrenaline, however, the very best thing you can do for yourself during your dental emergency in Clinton Township is to remain calm.
Why is it so important to stay cool and collected? Because your dental injury involves a tiny, delicate area that can easily sustain further damage. If you had a tooth knocked out or are dealing with a bleeding mouth, you’ll need to keep the area clean and collect any visible teeth or tooth fragments so you can bring them to your emergency dental appointment.
Our Clinton Township emergency dentist will do his very best to repair your smile, and the more help he can get from you, the more successful he will be!
When you contact our treatment team to schedule your emergency dental appointment, we will ask you to walk us through what happened and instruct you on how to treat your injuries temporarily. We’ll encourage you to sit down in a quiet, safe space until you can get to our dental office and to have a friend or family member drive and accompany you.
Dental emergencies can be shocking, but you can overcome the initial terror with some deep breaths and a little help from our dental treatment team.
How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies
Once you contact our Clinton Township emergency dentist, we’ll invite you to come in for the dental treatment you need.
Depending on how far away you live and how severe your injury is, you’ll most likely have minutes or even hours between the time of your emergency and the time you get to our dental chair. You may find it helpful to know what to expect and how to handle your pain and symptoms before you ever arrive.
When you know what to do during a dental emergency, it can often alleviate some of the stress associated with the situation.
Some of the emergencies that we often treat include:
Broken Fillings, Tooth Crowns, and Dentures
If you have a dental filling or appliance that’s damaged or lost, we will need to restore or repair it to protect your oral health. Please bring all the pieces of your broken restoration to your dental appointment so we can evaluate the damage and determine whether we can save the existing materials.
Most likely, we can quickly restore your dental filling right here during your emergency dentistry treatment. If your tooth crown or dentures are severely damaged, we may need to fit you for a temporary crown or denture flipper while we design your replacement.
Toothaches and Pain
Severe or constant dental pain often indicates an infected tooth. We need to treat your pain as soon as possible to keep the infection from getting worse, spreading, and resulting in tooth loss.
In the interim before your emergency dental appointment, you should take an over-the-counter painkiller to manage your symptoms. Once you arrive at our dental office for your Clinton Township emergency dentistry, we can prescribe something stronger for your pain.
Broken, Chipped Teeth
Chipped and cracked teeth can be painful and lead to increased sensitivity in that area of your mouth.
If possible, you should recover the broken tooth piece(s) and safely transport them to our dental office. You can gently rinse the tooth fragments to clear off debris or blood, but do not scrub or wipe down the pieces.
We need to repair your broken teeth right away because sharp edges can irritate your other teeth or soft tissues. Dr. Aiello will most likely use dental bonding, a tooth-colored filling, or a dental crown to repair your damaged tooth.
A Knocked-Out Tooth
Knocked-out, or “avulsed,” teeth are one of the most common types of dental emergencies. If your tooth becomes completely removed from your mouth, you need to rescue the tooth and place it in a glass of milk, saliva, or water until you can bring it to us.
Take care not to touch the root portion of the tooth, as this can damage the sensitive nerves and tissues around the tooth.
Contact Dr. Aiello immediately if you have a tooth that’s been dislodged. The faster he can treat it, the better chance he has of saving the tooth.
