What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a severe infection of the tissues and ligaments that support your teeth. In the early stages, commonly called gingivitis, this condition is reversible. However, periodontal disease is merely treatable. But with diligence and a compassionate dentist on your side, much of your gum health can be restored.

Causes of periodontal disease and contributing factors include but are not limited to:

  • Poor oral care or insufficient brushing and flossing
  • Lack of routine dental exams and teeth cleanings
  • Smoking or tobacco use

Without treatment, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and systematic health issues like heart attack and stroke. Periodontal disease may be linked to complications in pregnancy and Alzheimer’s disease.

At Michael Aiello, DDS, we do not judge. We simply want to help you enjoy a healthy smile and better overall wellness. With our LANAP® laser gum treatment, we can restore healthy gum tissues and give you a new reason to smile.

What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?

Your dentist in Clinton Township recommends scheduling an appointment at the first signs that something is amiss, which increases your odds for successful treatment. We also do not want periodontal disease to put your wellness at risk. With regular dental visits, your dentist will spot periodontal disease in the gingivitis stage.

Signs of gingivitis and periodontal disease may be subtle at first, which is why it’s essential to visit your dentist regularly for dental exams and teeth cleanings.

Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Longish appearance to the teeth as gums recede and pull away
  • Loose teeth
  • Periodic or ongoing toothaches
  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing and flossing

If you notice oral health changes that do not improve, we always recommend scheduling an appointment with our dentist.

How can I lower my risks for periodontal disease?

Fortunately, periodontal disease is preventable with proper dental care and an excellent at-home brushing and flossing routine.

The first step is regular dental exams—twice per year—for periodontal checks, x-rays as needed, and oral cancer screenings. Twice-yearly teeth cleanings with your hygienist are also critical to the long-term health of your teeth and gums.

Regular exams allow your dentist to spot gum health issues before you develop periodontal disease. Likewise, regular teeth cleanings rid your teeth and gums of the debris, tartar, and bacteria that contribute to the development of periodontal disease.

You should always combine your dental care with at-home care, which includes brushing and flossing at least twice per day. If your dentist in Clinton Township finds specific oral health issues, we may recommend a more customized brushing and flossing routine and dental visit schedule.

If you have missing teeth, ask your dentist how tooth replacement can help promote better gum health.

If already diagnosed with periodontal disease, talk to your dentist if you have (or suspect you have) bruxism as well—grinding and clenching your teeth, specifically during sleep.

What is bruxism?

While bruxism may not cause periodontal disease, it can contribute to the condition, influence the outcome, or exacerbate symptoms.

Bruxism means you grind and clench your teeth, specifically when asleep. This condition can lead to loose teeth, broken teeth, cavities, and even tooth loss. Aside from these issues, bruxism may contribute to jaw joint dysfunction, headaches, face pain, and more.

At Michael Aiello, DDS, we offer bruxism treatment to help combat this issue, including a custom appliance that gently separates your upper and lower jaw during sleep.

If you suspect bruxism, contact our dental office today to schedule an exam with our dentist.

What is LANAP® laser gum treatment in the 48038 area?

Dr. Aiello was one of the first dentists in the world to perform LANAP®, following training by the creators of this procedure, at the prestigious Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry. He has been successfully doing this procedure since 2005.

LANAP® is quite different than traditional gum surgery. Traditional osseous periodontal surgery involves a scalpel blade to cut away gum tissue and the placement of stitches. During LANAP®, we place a small laser fiber, about the width of a few human hairs, between the tooth and gum rather than cutting away gum tissue. The lack of cutting into tissues and the benefits of the PerioLase® laser makes your recovery nearly pain free.

What is the LANAP® process?

  • Probing:  A gentle probe measures the periodontal pocket depth
  • Ablation: We gently remove the diseased periodontal tissue with the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser. And we only target diseased tissue, stimulating the remaining healthy tissue to create new attachment and regrowth.
  • Root Surfaces Cleaned: Piezo Ultrasonic Scalers and hand instruments remove tartar, calculus, and unwanted debris from teeth.
  • Modification of Bone: Laser tissue regeneration initiates this step.
  • Fibrin Clot: The PerioLase® laser helps form a fibrin clot. This step creates a natural healing barrier around the teeth.
  • Reattachment: The gum tissue begins to form a new healthy reattachment to the teeth.
  • Occlusal Adjustment: The bite pressure is adjusted to remove improper contacts and pressure on the teeth.
  • True Periodontal Regeneration: Regrowth of healthy tooth-supporting tissue!

What are the benefits of LANAP®?

Compared to traditional periodontal surgery, LANAP® offers the following benefits:

  • Less pain
  • Healing is faster
  • Faster recovery time
  • Significantly less gum recession
  • Less tooth sensitivity
  • Bone regeneration
  • No stitches
