Gum disease is a common oral health condition that can affect one’s overall health. Nearly half of the American adult population over the age of 30 has some form of gum disease. Fortunately, several gum disease therapies are available to treat and control the condition so patients can enjoy healthy, comfortable smiles.

At the dental office of Michael Aiello, DDS, we offer periodontal laser therapy to treat gum disease. Untreated gum disease can spread, causing certain health complications, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Gum disease can also lead to bone and tissue loss, tooth loss, and loose or shifting teeth.

Laser gum treatment allows us to precisely and comfortably access and remove inflamed gum tissue from the tooth’s root. We can also thoroughly remove plaque and tartar from the teeth, around and below the gumline. After removing bacteria, plaque, and inflammation, we use a special instrument to perform root planing. Root planing smoothes the gum tissue, eliminating roughness and promoting gum reattachment to the tooth. Smoothing the gums also helps close the pockets, preventing additional bacteria from accumulating.

Laser gum treatment is fast, painless, and straightforward, so patients can receive their treatment promptly and achieve more accurate and comfortable results.

Your gums will need time to heal and regenerate after laser therapy. So, your gums should stay infection-free and tightly grip back around your teeth. Your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions, but we commonly recommend the following to prevent reinfection:

  • Eat soft, nutritious foods
  • Avoid hot and spicy foods
  • Avoid hard, sticky, and crunchy foods
  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily
  • Floss between your teeth at least once daily
  • Rinse your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash

The key to preventing reinfection is to practice A+ oral hygiene at home and visit your dentist for routine preventive dental exams and professional cleanings.
