What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease starts when bacteria successfully work their way under the gumline. As it grows and reproduces, the waste it makes turns to tartar. The tartar pushes the gum away from the tooth and bone, eventually causing many issues, like receding gumline, pocketing of bacteria in the gums, and damage to the teeth and jawbone.

Gingivitis and Advanced Stages of Periodontal Disease

The first stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, and it is the only stage that is fully reversible.

After the problem progresses into advanced stages, the damage periodontal disease becomes permanent, but we can still stop the advancement and mitigate the effects of the damage with proper treatment.

Waiting to address the issue is the biggest mistake someone with periodontal disease can make. After bacteria gets deep into the gums cleaning like brushing and flossing will be ineffective, and the problem may continue to worsen.

Keeping up on routine cleanings and checkups can do wonders to prevent periodontal disease from ever manifesting. Routine cleanings help keep gums healthy and allow the dentist to find any issues early before they advance.
